Meeting Phil Gordon
A very cool event came to Chicago two nights ago. Degree deodorant for Men is putting on a series in 6 US cities, where Phil Gordon comes to the ESPN Zone and puts on a 1 hour "Poker School". He goes through some strategies for No Limit that are beyond the beginner stuff. AND---to sweeten the pot, it is free to the first 250 or so attendees, free food and booze, AND there is a drawing for a FREE seat to the 2006 WSOP main event. I wish I could say that I won---so I'll throw that out there now...no suspense, no seat for me......yet.
I was actually pleasantly surprised by the presentation Phil gave. Of course his public presence and speaking ability are great---he has plenty of experience, and seems to be a pretty good guy overall. But he put together some strategies, lessons and tips that probably truely advanced the skills of many in the audience. For me, it really made me reflect on the way that I play, and I'm going to try some of the things he suggested (of course I'm not going to say what....cmon now). He even put together a very easy to follow demonstration of Pot Odds and Implied Pot Odds---topics that most novices have only heard some of on TV, or are completely ignorant to. I think most of the crowd got it.
All in all it was a pretty good event. Justin "one more card" was supposed to come too, but he wussed out when he remembered he had a Cubs ticket that night and couldn't end up selling it in time. I'll keep torturing him by reminding him that with his luck, he would have won that seat---and would have undoubetedly turned it into $1M+ in winnings at the 2006 WSOP.
Phil even dealt with the sometimes pushy Chicago crowd members who don't know when to:
A. wait their turn, or
B. shut up.
A little pimpage for Phil for a job well done:
